This is the beginning of my first ever official project car. So some background info:
Purchased for $300
Absolutely no rust
Various dents dings and scrapes, light for a Jeep
Has been parked since July of 2015
Has 172k+ miles
Also has oil in the coolant reservoir
It doesn’t appear sludgy under the valve cover
Nor does the oil appear milky
Also it had an oil change right before breaking down
Let the saga begin!

$300 is hard to beat. Sounds like a good starter for a project.

Seems to be a “Good from far but far from good” affair, cuz it looks pretty minty in the pictures.
I really like the XJ’s looks. It’s a no-nonsense design that aged perfectly. Pretty much like E39s, W124s, you name it.....

Oil in the coolant is ugly, but perhaps manageable once the source of contamination is found and fixed. I’d be more worried about coolant in the oil. It might not be milky, but an oil change is a good idea, just to make sure. Since water is heavier than oil, any coolant that got into the crankcase would drain first once you pull the drain plug.
Nice looking XJ though! Definitely worth investing a bit of TLC.

I have yet to discover that. I will have to get it home and drain the fluids to know.

2000 or 2001? Those are the years with coil packs & low pinion front axles, and the problematic heads that warp or crack.

I am dating the daughter of the previous owner(also the driver when it broke down). They know nothing about cars really and can only say what they've been told.

its fun getting them to tell you what happened for diagnosis.

I'm trying to. At first I thought it was a blown head gasket. Now some research points to the oil cooler releasing fluid into the radiator and they said once upon a time it had radiator work. I guess I'll find out once I drain all of the fluids.

Fix it
Install very small lift
Put on newer larger tires
Build new bumper and brushguard with lights and winch
New roof rack
Use as toy or(most likely scenario) let my girlfriend drive it

They are an inspiration. It this wasn’t my girlfriend’s old car and if I didn't want a toy it would end that way.

well if its the cooler, you might get lucky and be able to bypass it. see if the milky evaporates with the heat of the motor running, or gets worse.

If that's what it is I plan on replacing it. I want to be able to properly use it if I feel like it.
